UK Graduate Route is changing: from 2 years to 18 months

What is changing Apply on or before 31 December 2026: you get 2 years to stay and work in the UK after your degree. No change. Apply on or after 1 January 2027: you get 18 months. This applies to bachelor's and master's graduates. PhD graduates are unaffected — they still get 3 years. There is no way to extend a Graduate visa once it is granted. You either switch to a different visa (such as a Skilled Worker visa) before it expires, or you leave. Why this matters for Pakistani students right now This is not a future problem. It is a timeline problem today. If you are applying for a UK master's starting in September 2026, you will likely finish your course and apply for your Graduate visa sometime in 2027 — after the new rule takes effect. That means 18 months, not 24, to find a job and switch to a work visa. Six fewer months may not sound like much. But for someone trying to find a sponsor and switch to a Skilled Worker visa, those six months are often the difference between staying in the UK and having to go home. What this means if you are working with a consultant Many consultants are still selling the UK on the basis of "2 years to work after you graduate." That was true. It is becoming wrong for anyone applying after 1 January 2027. This is not always deliberate misinformation — consultant materials take time to update, and many agents are simply repeating what they were told months ago. But you should not assume the person advising you has checked the current rules. Confirm the date yourself. Questions to ask Before you commit to a UK master's on the basis of post-study work rights, ask: 1. "Based on my intake date, will I be applying for my Graduate visa before or after 1 January 2027?" Work backwards from your course end date, not your start date. 2. "Is this 18 months or 2 years?" If a consultant says "2 years" without qualifying it, ask them to confirm against the date. 3. "What is my actual plan once the Graduate visa runs out?" 18 months is enough time to find a job, but you need a plan for switching to a Skilled Worker visa before the clock runs out — not after. The bottom line The UK is still issuing Graduate visas. The post-study work route still exists. What has changed is the runway — and that runway is shorter for anyone finishing their degree from 2027 onward. Plan your job search and visa switch around 18 months, not 24.
