MEXT Scholarship 2027 — Japan
The Japanese government's flagship scholarship. Fully funded — tuition, accommodation, and monthly stipend — and one of the few major programmes for which no IELTS or TOEFL score is required. Pakistan has been included since 1954.
Deadline alert — Research track closing imminently
The MEXT Research Scholarship (master's/PhD) 2027 deadline is 26 May 2026. Check the Embassy of Japan Pakistan website immediately if you are reading this close to that date. The Undergraduate track deadline is 5 June 2026.
Two tracks — both via Islamabad embassy
| Track | Level | Deadline (2027 intake) |
|---|---|---|
| Research Scholarship | Master's / PhD | 26 May 2026 |
| Undergraduate Scholarship | Bachelor's | 5 June 2026 |
Both tracks are applied for through the Embassy of Japan in Islamabad — not directly to universities.
What it covers
No bond requirement. No compulsory return clause — unlike ADB–JSP.

The application process
Both tracks follow the same two-stage embassy route.
- 1
Embassy screening (Pakistan)
Submit documents to the Embassy of Japan, Islamabad. The embassy screens applications, conducts written examinations, and shortlists candidates for interview. You will not be contacted if not shortlisted.
- 2
MEXT recommendation and university placement (Japan)
The embassy recommends shortlisted candidates to MEXT in Tokyo. MEXT facilitates university placement. You can indicate up to 3 universities in preference order. For the Research Scholarship, you are not required to contact a professor before applying — the university requests this at a later stage.

Common mistakes Pakistani applicants make
Submitting documents without proper attestation
IBCC + HEC + MOFA is required for all Pakistani educational documents. Missing any layer means disqualification. Attestation takes time — do not leave it for the week before the deadline.
Applying to the undergraduate track without understanding the language requirement
The undergraduate programme is delivered in Japanese. There is no written Japanese test at the application stage, but you will be studying in Japanese from day one. Applicants who have not started learning Japanese, or who are not committed to doing so, will struggle significantly.
Treating the research proposal as a formality
For the Research track, the study plan is substantive. It needs to explain your research interest, why a Japanese university is the right place to pursue it, and how it connects to your previous academic work. Vague proposals are a common reason for non-shortlisting.
Assuming a consultant is necessary
The Embassy of Japan Pakistan publishes complete, clear guidelines. The application can be prepared independently. There is no part of this process that requires a paid agent. If you are being charged to 'submit' an MEXT application on your behalf, that is not a service worth paying for.
Is Japan the right destination for you?
MEXT is one of the most competitive fully funded scholarships available to Pakistani students. If you get it, the financial case for Japan is clear. The harder question is whether Japan — beyond the scholarship — aligns with your goals.
- If you want to settle abroad after graduating: Japan is not designed as a migration pathway. PR takes 10 years on the standard route and requires Japanese language proficiency.
- If you want to build a career in Japan after graduating: possible, but only if you reach JLPT N2 (advanced Japanese). Plan for that from day one.
- If you want a world-class funded research degree and plan to return to Pakistan or move elsewhere: Japan is a strong option.
